What’s Mpreg?
The Mpreg (Male Pregnancy) trope is a recurring theme in Yaoi, appearing in various comics and novels. It is closely linked to the Omegaverse, also known as A/B/O dynamics (Alpha, Beta, Omega). This fantasy sub-genre introduces an animalistic hierarchy into human relationships.
In the Omegaverse, Alphas (A) are dominant, strong, and possessive, while Betas (B) are neutral humans without Alpha or Omega traits. Omegas (O) are submissive, experience heat cycles, and are often capable of male pregnancy—this is where Mpreg becomes a key element.
The Omegaverse trope surged in popularity in the mid-2010s, evolving from supernatural fandoms like Sherlock, Teen Wolf, and various Marvel works. However, Mpreg as a concept predates Omegaverse. It appeared in early Shoujo and Yaoi stories, often linked to magic, deities, or futuristic science. Despite its earlier presence, it wasn’t widely accepted until Omegaverse helped normalize it.
